When Disney bought the Disneyland Hotel in the late 1980s, the Queen Mary attraction in Long Beach, California came along with it. In 1990, Disney unveiled plans for a theme park and more around the Queen Mary. Within a few years, Disney dropped plans for Long Beach and pulled out.

The Queen Mary attraction has had a rough time.

Now it looks like the area will finally get some renewal. Articles in the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the Los Angeles Times give the details of the auction of the lease, and the winning bidder’s plans.

From the Press-Telegram:

Save the Queen, which nearly negotiated an out-of-court, $49 million sale of the lease with the city last month, has described its plans for the site as a theme resort, not unlike Universal City Walk in Los Angeles. It counts Hix Rubenstein, a firm out of Mountain View, among its partners and is backed by iStar, Babcock & Brown and Garrison Investments.

From the Times:

The city, which owns the Queen Mary, had been trying to find a new partner for the ship after its leaseholder, Queen’s Seaport Development Inc., filed for bankruptcy protection two years ago. The ocean liner, which has been permanently docked in Long Beach Harbor for nearly 40 years, offers a hotel, restaurants, exhibits and other attractions.
